DPO101 ➣ AI ACT: Compliance Implementation
The AI Act - European Regulation
The European Artificial Intelligence Act (AI ACT), coming into effect in July 2024, regulates the use of AI within the EU to ensure security and fundamental rights. It classifies AI applications based on risk levels, requires compliance assessments for high-risk applications, and prohibits certain practices deemed dangerous. The goal is to promote trustworthy AI while fostering innovation.

The AI Act in Brief
The AI Act is the European Union’s first regulatory framework designed to oversee the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Its objective is to ensure the safe and responsible use of AI technologies while protecting fundamental rights. The regulation follows a risk-based approach, categorizing AI systems based on their potential risk level: unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal.
Companies deploying high-risk AI systems are subject to the strictest requirements. They must establish a risk management system, provide comprehensive technical documentation, ensure transparency for users, implement human oversight mechanisms, and monitor system performance after deployment. Limited-risk systems have lighter transparency obligations, while minimal-risk systems are not subject to specific requirements.
To achieve compliance, companies must first assess the risk level of their AI system. They must then ensure comprehensive documentation and implement monitoring mechanisms to identify incidents post-deployment. Employee training is also essential to promote ethical AI usage.
However, compliance with the AI Act presents challenges, such as technical complexity, compliance costs, and the rapid evolution of AI technologies. Despite these challenges, adhering to the AI Act’s requirements helps businesses strengthen user trust and contribute to a safer digital ecosystem in Europe.
In summary, the AI Act establishes a regulatory framework for the responsible use of AI, balancing innovation and rights protection while setting clear compliance requirements for businesses.
